DESCRIPTION:After reading Life of the Party: The Remarkable Story of How Brownie Wise Built\, and Lost\, a Tupperware Party Empire\, it seemed only logical that Dames Who Read should meet for an old-fashioned Tupperware party of our own! So dig out any vintage Tupperware containers hiding in your cabinets and bring your best vintage picnic recipe to share for an All-American get-together. \nA typical single mom and homemaker of the 50’s\, Brownie Wise was pushed aside and forgotten as the powerhouse who invented a wildly successful party sales system\, and grew a homely little company into a major national business. She fought sexist\, chauvinist corporate America and captivated everyone -except her boss who invented the actual product from a lump of mysterious plastic. \nIt’s planned as a typical 50’s summer picnic\, so duplicates on the table are to be expected\, but if you’d like to let Judith know ahead if you are bringing apps\, salad\, main or dessert\, it might help make our meal better organized – or we will just “take pot luck” and go with what arrives ! Please bring your contribution ready-to-serve and with serving utensils. \nThere should be plentiful street parking. The location (sent upon registration) is also 3 blocks from Main Street CTA and Metra stations. \nDate: July 28\, 2026 \nTime:  6-8pm \nLocation: A private residence in Evanston \nPrice: $30

DESCRIPTION:Bread & War by Felicia Spector \nThere are heroes everywhere and\, in the war-torn Ukraine\, Felicia Spector traveled with many of them in an effort to hear and share their stories. She worked with Bake for Ukraine\, a small non-profit run from Odessa and comprised of food people with a mission of promoting culture as well as fundraising and sourcing equipment for small bakeries which make free bread for those most in need. These extraordinary stories of refugees and restaurateurs who rebuild lives and kitchens in the midst of chaos show a determination to provide good food for a besieged people. \nWhile the war and its victims exist in a very depressing world\, the book is “gently heroic and humane. Reading it is like sharing a comforting meal with strangers in time of distress”. Through her writing\, you will find humor and humanity in the midst of so much inhumanity.* \nSince February is nasty-weather-time in Chicago\, this discussion will be on Zoom. And it will be led by non-other than the author herself\, who will be joining us from her home in London (thus the earlier start time – please note!) \nAs a companion book\, if you have time to read more\, get your hands on Jose Andres’ little book called CHANGE THE RECIPE — “Because you can’t build a better world without breaking some eggs.” Here is one of the most impressive humanitarians and Heros of War\, who shows up wherever people are in distress and feeds them. His book is a collection of life lessons-and wisdom from a man who has dedicated his life to changing the world through the power of food. \nSince you will be at home and we won’t be dining together\, perhaps you will want to break out a loaf of crusty bread and/or make a pot of steaming soup to enjoy as we talk. Felicity has included a few recipes for each in the back of her book for inspiration. I recommend the Mushroom Yushka Soup! \nDate: Tuesday\, February 10\, 2026  \nTime:  5:00pm CST (NOTE THE EARLIER START TIME) \nLocation: Zoom \nPrice: $20

DESCRIPTION:Hosted at Private Home in Evanston\, IL \nWe know Judith Jones as the editor who successfully shepherded Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking into the world\, as well as all subsequent Julia books. While those made her a well-known name in the cooking world\, she was behind the scenes and the success of hundreds of other books\, not all of which were cookbooks. \nThis fascinating biography tells us who she was\, but also the back story on how books get published – the many steps it takes\, the egos that need pampering\, the steel will Judith Jones exhibited in her long career. And it tells us a lot about the personalities of so many authors as diverse as Sylvia Plath\, John Updike\, Anne Frank\, Anne Tyler and so many\, many more. \nTo focus on the breadth of that list of cookbooks\, attendees’ “homework”  for this Dames Who Read meeting will be to choose one of her books  (think beyond the Julia Child volumes) and pick a recipe to bring to our pot luck evening to share as we discuss a woman who was so important yet existed out of the limelight. DESCRIPTION:“Black Cake\,” a New Novel by Charmaine Wilkerson is the Book for March\nFrom Dame Judith Hines: I recently watched an author interview about this debut novel and found it quite interesting\, so I ordered the book to see if it was “Dames-Book-Club-worthy.” It is! I then went on a hunt for the perfect place to hold our discussion\, and Dame Toria Emas helped me find a family-owned restaurant whose motto is\, “We believe people are better together. Our goal is to bring people together through food.” \n“Black Cake” is written in a flash-back\, flash-forward style\, with lots of characters\, and while that is not usually my favorite style\, I loved the book. \nHere’s a short description: “In present day California\, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children: a recipe for a traditional Caribbean Black Cake\, made from a family recipe with a long history. She also left a voice recording recounting that family’s story filled with revelations surprising\, puzzling and challenging for her children and for the reader.” \nSo it’s a novel with a bit of mystery to unravel and plenty to discuss about family interactions\, secrets and expectations. Join us at a new-ish\, casual Noble Square Jamaican restaurant for dinner and bring your own impressions of the story. DESCRIPTION:The Poison Squad by Deborah Blum \nOne Chemist’s Single-Minded Crusade for Food Safety at the Turn of the Twentieth Century \nToday thinking cooks and eaters have learned to carefully examine the ingredient lists on prepared foods\, looking to avoid additives or preservatives that may not be necessary – and may even be harmful – in our diet. But in the past\, not only were those ingredients not listed in any reliable form\, but were often not necessary\, and in many cases actually poisonous! Or at the least\, entirely questionable. And generally false. \nGround chalk in baking powder\, lemon drops colored yellow with poisonous lead chromate\, chocolate faked by using burned sienna\, a pigment made from oxides of iron and manganese\, or “ketchup” made from red-dyed pumpkin\, were just a few of these examples. \nWe expect to be protected by laws set by the federal agencies such as USDA or FDA. Our ancestors had no such protections. But when those agencies were established\, it was a monumental fight between politicians and manufacturers\, a struggle between money and safety. \nOur fall\, Back-to-School\, selection will deal with those struggles and solutions and indicate how\, when and why food products and ingredients are managed today. DESCRIPTION:THE BOOK: A Place at the Nayarit \nHow a Mexican Restaurant Nourished a Community by Natalia Molina \nIn 1951\, Dona Natalia Barraza opened the Nayarit\, a Mexican restaurant in Echo Park\, Los Angeles. With A Place at the Nayarit\, historian Natalia Molina traces the life’s work of her grandmother\, remembered by all who knew her as Dona Natalia – a generous\, reserved\, and extraordinarily capable woman. Dona Natalia immigrated alone from Mexico to L.A.\, adopted two children\, and ran a successful business. She also sponsored\, housed\, and employed dozens of other immigrants\, encouraging them to lay claim to a city long characterized by anti-Latinx racism. Together\, the employees and customers of the Nayarit maintained ties to their old homes while providing one another safety and support. \nAs Les Dames focus on our own during this year of recovery\, it is only appropriate that we feature Dame Maria Concannon\, who immigrated from Mexico\, but soon found herself a single mom in a strange country with no way to support herself…until she opened her own restaurant\, despite being a kitchen neophyte. Years later\, she and her son are still running their restaurant\, though in a new location. The food is always delicious\, and Maria is to be admired for her many achievements. \nWe will hear her tell her story whole we enjoy her delicious authentic Mexico City style foods. You will realize that her story is not unlike that of the book – the matriarch who encouraged and supported her staff and won the admiration of her customers\, not just for the food! \nYou must be registered by noon on Friday August 12
