DESCRIPTION:After reading Life of the Party: The Remarkable Story of How Brownie Wise Built\, and Lost\, a Tupperware Party Empire\, it seemed only logical that Dames Who Read should meet for an old-fashioned Tupperware party of our own! So dig out any vintage Tupperware containers hiding in your cabinets and bring your best vintage picnic recipe to share for an All-American get-together. \nA typical single mom and homemaker of the 50’s\, Brownie Wise was pushed aside and forgotten as the powerhouse who invented a wildly successful party sales system\, and grew a homely little company into a major national business. She fought sexist\, chauvinist corporate America and captivated everyone -except her boss who invented the actual product from a lump of mysterious plastic. \nIt’s planned as a typical 50’s summer picnic\, so duplicates on the table are to be expected\, but if you’d like to let Judith know ahead if you are bringing apps\, salad\, main or dessert\, it might help make our meal better organized – or we will just “take pot luck” and go with what arrives ! Please bring your contribution ready-to-serve and with serving utensils. \nThere should be plentiful street parking. The location (sent upon registration) is also 3 blocks from Main Street CTA and Metra stations. \nDate: July 28\, 2026 \nTime:  6-8pm \nLocation: A private residence in Evanston \nPrice: $30

SUMMARY:Dames Who Read April 2026: The Rarest Fruit
DESCRIPTION:Some of you may remember how charmed and enlightened we were when we read “The Food Explorer”\, which was all about the discovery and importation of various food items\, most of which are extremely common today. Our current book is all about one of our favorites of those items\, vanilla\, and how the conundrum of pollinating the flowers was finally solved by a young slave\, whose story then went unrecorded for many years. From the book’s cover is this review: “A two-century-old story brought back to life by (Belem’s) smart\,voluptuous\, no-nonsense pen balancing fantasy\, Creole mythology and Reunionese folklore” \nAuthor Gaelle Belem carefully researched the very few existing records of this discovery and its discoverer. Based on this limited\, tho accurate\, amount of information\, she has pieced it into a fascinating and historical novel. Read the book and join us on a field trip to Waukegan for a facility tour and lunch discussion. We will taste various vanilla flavors and hear the story of the Nielsen-Massey family business. DESCRIPTION:Dame Heidi Moorman Coudal invites Les Dames d’Escoffier Chicago for a fun gathering in her West Town Urban Farm. Big Delicious Planet has been recognized as the Greenest caterer in America for 13 years\, and has been growing food next to their catering kitchen and event space since 2012. The beautiful BDP Urban Farm is located on three city lots\, and features 81 raised beds and five beehives. You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to Napa Valley for a couple hours. \nBDP will offer a seasonal cocktail/mocktail\, wine\, and a grazing station showcasing the autumn harvest. Weather permitting\, the event will be held indoors and outdoors from 5:30–8:00 PM. 412 N. Wolcott Avenue. There’s usually plenty of free street parking available. DESCRIPTION:Chicago has always been known as a welcoming location for immigrants\, and no neighborhood proves this more than the area around 18th Street\, now known as Pilsen. \nOn our walking and eating tour of this picturesque neighborhood\, you will see architecture and art (including LOTS of murals!) indicative of all of those who have passed through.  We will also sample foods from family-owned businesses making the area “one of the best neighborhoods in the country” as it has been named in recent press. \nWe will walk and talk about the neighborhood’s history\, art\, culture and\, of course\, its foods. Along the way\, we will be eating\, then we will have a sit-down tasting\, family style. Please let us know if you have any food allergies or intolerances so we can do our best to anticipate and avoid those.  All responsibility for tasting is yours. \nLed by Dame Judith Hines\, you will hear stories\, see murals\, and taste delicious Mexican specialties.  Meet at \nNUEVO LEON PANADERIA  \n1634 W 18th Street \nWe will have an extensive walk\, rain or shine\, so come prepared. (You may also want to visit the National Mexican Museum of Art\, which will be nearby but not included on the tour –  their hours are 10 am – 5 pm.) \nTransportation:   CTA Pink Line   18th street stop is 1 ½ blocks from starting point. Street parking –  some meters are 3 hours\, some are 2  There are even a FEW free spots.
