SUMMARY:Pizza Tour with Steve Dolinsky
DESCRIPTION:Chicago is a pizza town\, no doubt about it\, and who better to lead a tour through the region’s best pizza places than the guy who wrote the book on the subject? Join us and Steve Dolinsky (Chicago’s pizza expert) as we visit four pizzerias and sample their best pizzas. Soft drinks and alcohol can be purchased separately. Your ticket includes a copy of Steve’s book – The Ultimate Chicago Pizza Guide: A History of Squares and Slices in the Windy City. \nAbout our host: Steve Dolinsky is a 13-time James Beard Award-winning food reporter who’s lived in Chicago for more than 25 years. He’s eaten more than his fair share of pizza for his work as the “Hungry Hound” at ABC 7 News\, Host/Producer of the “Pizza City” Podcast and travel writer for The Chicago Tribune. Steve tried 185 pizzas in the region\, settling on 101 outstanding pizzas\, broken into 10 distinct styles. One of the biggest surprises of all: Chicago is a “thin” town (that is\, tavern-style\, square-cut) as opposed to the deep-dish and stuffed images of gigantic pies most people associate with The Windy City.

SUMMARY:Dames Who Read 50th Book
DESCRIPTION:Dames Who Read 50th Book\nNational Dish by Anya Von Bremzen \n \nIn this engrossing and timely journey to the crossroads of food and identity\, award-winning writer Anya von Bremzen explores six of the world’s most fascinating and iconic culinary cultures—France\, Italy\, Japan\, Spain\, Mexico\, and Turkey—brilliantly weaving cuisine\, history\, and politics into a work of scintillating connoisseurship and charm. \nTraditionally\, our winter book has been one that takes some time to read and absorb. This one is no exception. You will learn so much about how now-familiar foods have come to be identified with a specific place\, when in fact\, they may have originated somewhere else and often traveled around the globe before settling in their accepted “place.” It’s a great read! Each of the six chapters deals with a different dish and its history. There is no plot to follow\, so read them in any order. \nThis event is free to attend. This is a Dames Only event. \nRegister below by Friday\, Feb. 23 at 12 noon to get the Zoom link

SUMMARY:Dames Who Read is Back with "Lessons in Chemistry" by Bonnie Garmus
DESCRIPTION:After more 40 weeks at the top of The New York Times Book Review list\, everyone is talking about this book right now. (I even got a random positive review from a gentleman in the chair next to me at the hair salon!) \nFrom The New York Times:  “Feminism is the catalyst that makes LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY fizz like hydrochloric acid on limestone. Elizabeth Zott does not have “moxie”\, she has courage. She is not a “girl boss” or a “lady chemist”; she’s a groundbreaker\, irresistible\, satisfying\, and full of fuel.  It reminds you that change takes time and always requires heat.” \nOur discussion will center on the production of television food shows as well as the struggles to be the “first” or “only” in a role to make them happen. Three of our Dames Who Read\, who have many hours of experience in food TV\, will lead the conversation\, and chances are good that everyone will have some experiences of their own to share in this discussion! \nAnd for summer fun: We are doing this as a potluck at book club regular Dame Kay Ruff’s home in the South Loop. Please think about something you learned from a food TV show\, and bring that to share\, along with any related stories. Our hostess will provide the spectacular lake view\, the H2O and NaCl and do the dishes. You bring a dish and your beverage of choice.  \nNOTE: Please let Judith know what you intend to bring so that we don’t end up with 20 Boeuf Bourguignons! Email  judith@judithdunbarhines.com prior to July 10 with your planned contribution. \nALSO NOTE: We have a limit of 20 attendees and registration ends July 10. \nWHEN: Tuesday\, July 18 from 6-8 p.m.\nWHERE: Dame Kathy Ruff’s home\nCOST: $15 per person; limit of 20 people\nREGISTER: Click HERE to sign up by July 10

SUMMARY:Dames Who Read Book Club is Back!
DESCRIPTION:“Black Cake\,” a New Novel by Charmaine Wilkerson is the Book for March\nFrom Dame Judith Hines: I recently watched an author interview about this debut novel and found it quite interesting\, so I ordered the book to see if it was “Dames-Book-Club-worthy.” It is! I then went on a hunt for the perfect place to hold our discussion\, and Dame Toria Emas helped me find a family-owned restaurant whose motto is\, “We believe people are better together. Our goal is to bring people together through food.” \n“Black Cake” is written in a flash-back\, flash-forward style\, with lots of characters\, and while that is not usually my favorite style\, I loved the book. \nHere’s a short description: “In present day California\, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children: a recipe for a traditional Caribbean Black Cake\, made from a family recipe with a long history. She also left a voice recording recounting that family’s story filled with revelations surprising\, puzzling and challenging for her children and for the reader.” \nSo it’s a novel with a bit of mystery to unravel and plenty to discuss about family interactions\, secrets and expectations. Join us at a new-ish\, casual Noble Square Jamaican restaurant for dinner and bring your own impressions of the story. Yes\, there will be a Black Cake to enjoy at our get-together\, made from the recipe included in the book. \n  \nDate: Tuesday March 7th \nTime: 6-8 p.m. \nLocation: Dr. Bird’s at 1215 N Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago \nCost: No cost to attend\, but each participant will pay for her own food and drink at the restaurant. IMPORTANT: No cash; credit cards only. There is a variety of tropical drinks on the menu (to which rum can be added if you choose!) plus wine and sangria. \nParking: Street parking is limited; use public transit or ride-share if you can. \nRSVP: Email judith@judithdunbarhines.com by March 3rd. If you must cancel\, please let Judith know. \n  \nYou can find the author interview here. WARNING: THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS INTERVIEW so read the book first before watching.

SUMMARY:Dames Who Read - The Poison Squad by Deborah Blum
DESCRIPTION:The Poison Squad by Deborah Blum \nOne Chemist’s Single-Minded Crusade for Food Safety at the Turn of the Twentieth Century \nToday thinking cooks and eaters have learned to carefully examine the ingredient lists on prepared foods\, looking to avoid additives or preservatives that may not be necessary – and may even be harmful – in our diet. But in the past\, not only were those ingredients not listed in any reliable form\, but were often not necessary\, and in many cases actually poisonous! Or at the least\, entirely questionable. And generally false. \nGround chalk in baking powder\, lemon drops colored yellow with poisonous lead chromate\, chocolate faked by using burned sienna\, a pigment made from oxides of iron and manganese\, or “ketchup” made from red-dyed pumpkin\, were just a few of these examples. \nWe expect to be protected by laws set by the federal agencies such as USDA or FDA. Our ancestors had no such protections. But when those agencies were established\, it was a monumental fight between politicians and manufacturers\, a struggle between money and safety. \nOur fall\, Back-to-School\, selection will deal with those struggles and solutions and indicate how\, when and why food products and ingredients are managed today. It’s a true and well-researched tale or intrigue and eye-opening discoveries you may have never considered. \nNo\, we will not tempt fate by forming our own Poison Squad and trying any of these harmful items. In fact\, this book review will be on Zoom\, so any ingestibles are up to you in your own home! Grab a bite and a glass and join us for what is expected to be a lively discussion. \nThanks to DWR fan Toria Emas for proposing this fascinating book for our group!! \nTuesday November 1\, 6 pm via ZOOM. \nThe event is free\, but please register before October 28 to receive the link. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Dames Who Read - A Place at the Nayarit
DESCRIPTION:THE BOOK: A Place at the Nayarit \nHow a Mexican Restaurant Nourished a Community by Natalia Molina \nIn 1951\, Dona Natalia Barraza opened the Nayarit\, a Mexican restaurant in Echo Park\, Los Angeles. With A Place at the Nayarit\, historian Natalia Molina traces the life’s work of her grandmother\, remembered by all who knew her as Dona Natalia – a generous\, reserved\, and extraordinarily capable woman. Dona Natalia immigrated alone from Mexico to L.A.\, adopted two children\, and ran a successful business. She also sponsored\, housed\, and employed dozens of other immigrants\, encouraging them to lay claim to a city long characterized by anti-Latinx racism. Together\, the employees and customers of the Nayarit maintained ties to their old homes while providing one another safety and support. \nAs Les Dames focus on our own during this year of recovery\, it is only appropriate that we feature Dame Maria Concannon\, who immigrated from Mexico\, but soon found herself a single mom in a strange country with no way to support herself…until she opened her own restaurant\, despite being a kitchen neophyte. Years later\, she and her son are still running their restaurant\, though in a new location. The food is always delicious\, and Maria is to be admired for her many achievements. \nWe will hear her tell her story whole we enjoy her delicious authentic Mexico City style foods. You will realize that her story is not unlike that of the book – the matriarch who encouraged and supported her staff and won the admiration of her customers\, not just for the food! \nYou must be registered by noon on Friday August 12
