SUMMARY:Dames Who Read - “Dinner with the President” by Alex Prud’homme
DESCRIPTION:Timing is everything for our first book for 2025: “Dinner with the President – Food\,\nPolitics and a History of Breaking Bread at the White House.” We will meet on Zoom\nthe day after the President’s Day holiday to hear about the importance of food and the\ndining table in the political history of the USA\, directly from the author! \nApproximately 25 of our presidents and their menus\, dining habits and guest lists are\ncovered in the book\, from George Washington to Joe Biden\, including stories of the\nWhite House executive chefs who were tasked with honoring the Presidents’ whims\nwhile cooking for the family and also entertaining heads of state at grand banquets. \nDid you know that Richard Nixon’s favorite restaurant was Trader Vic’s ? Or that\nWoodrow Wilson was such a picky eater with stomach problems that his ideal meal was\nclear soup\, chicken salad and strawberry ice cream? Imagine President Grant lobbing a\nbread roll at the British Ambassador’s wife during a State Dinner! Filled with decades of\nhistory\, this book is also entirely entertaining. \nJacques Pepin says about the book: “’Dinner with the President’ is a splendid and\ncaptivating book about the power of food in American politics.” And Stanley Tucci’s\nreview is this: “A deeply researched and beautifully written book about how the\npresidential palate has helped shape America.” \nAuthor Alex Prod’homme has agreed to join us on this Zoom call and share his\nresearch and insights. We know you won’t want to miss this exciting opportunity to hear\nfrom him first-hand. No winter travel is necessary to attend this one\, so please register\nto receive the Zoom link. We look forward to what will most certainly be a lively and\nfascinating discussion. \nLDEI Chicago’s Book Club is for Members Only.

DESCRIPTION:Hosted at Private Home in Evanston\, IL \nWe know Judith Jones as the editor who successfully shepherded Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking into the world\, as well as all subsequent Julia books. While those made her a well-known name in the cooking world\, she was behind the scenes and the success of hundreds of other books\, not all of which were cookbooks. \nThis fascinating biography tells us who she was\, but also the back story on how books get published – the many steps it takes\, the egos that need pampering\, the steel will Judith Jones exhibited in her long career. And it tells us a lot about the personalities of so many authors as diverse as Sylvia Plath\, John Updike\, Anne Frank\, Anne Tyler and so many\, many more. \nTo focus on the breadth of that list of cookbooks\, attendees’ “homework”  for this Dames Who Read meeting will be to choose one of her books  (think beyond the Julia Child volumes) and pick a recipe to bring to our pot luck evening to share as we discuss a woman who was so important yet existed out of the limelight. (A partial list is below) \nMiddle Eastern Food – Claudia Rodin\nOrganic Gardening – Catherine Osgood Foster\nVegetarian Epicure – Anne Thomas\nInvitation to Indian Cooking – Madhur Jaffrey\nKey to Chinese Cooking – Irene Kuo\nSimka’s Cusine – Simone Beck\nBeard on Bread – James Beard\nThe Taste of Country Cooking – Edna Lewis\nAmong Friends – MFK Fisher\nThe Fannie Farmer Cookbook – (Revision)\nL L Bean Game and Fish – Angus Cameron\nHoney From a Weed – Patience Gray\nA Year in Provence – Peter Maile\nBiscuits\, Spoonbread and Sweet Potato Pie – Bill Neal\nCooking with Rosie – Rosie Daley\nA Spoonful of Ginger – Nina Simon\nAt Home with Japanese Cooking – Elizabeth Andoh\nLidia’s Family Table – Lidia Bastianich\nPleasures of the Good Earth – Ed Giobbi\nMany by – Joan Nathan and Marcella Hazan \n

SUMMARY:Bordeaux & Comte Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Red or white wine with cheese? \nWith three wines from Grand Cru Château Talbot in St Julien and three expressions of Comté cheese from the Jura mountains of France\, we’d like to propose a light experiment in the successful pairing of wine and cheese. \nChâteau Talbot produces three wines: Château Talbot\, Connétable Talbot\, Caillou Blanc. These wines are based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for the reds\, and Sauvignon and Sémillon for the white. The Château is located atop of a plateau overlooking the Gironde estuary in the St Julien appellation and has a long storied history. \nComté cheese is a PDO cheese which traces its origins over 1000 years ago in the Jura Massif. Crafted every day in some 140 fruitières\, it is a pressed\, cooked cheese made with raw milk from the Montbéliarde and Simmental cows. The 80-lb wheels are aged by 14 local affinage houses and weigh approximately 80lbs each. \nJoin Jean-Louis Carbonnier USA spokesperson for both Château Talbot & Comté cheese in this tasty pairing experiment together. \n

SUMMARY:Pizza Tour with Steve Dolinsky
DESCRIPTION:Chicago is a pizza town\, no doubt about it\, and who better to lead a tour through the region’s best pizza places than the guy who wrote the book on the subject? Join us and Steve Dolinsky (Chicago’s pizza expert) as we visit four pizzerias and sample their best pizzas. Soft drinks and alcohol can be purchased separately. Your ticket includes a copy of Steve’s book – The Ultimate Chicago Pizza Guide: A History of Squares and Slices in the Windy City. \nAbout our host: Steve Dolinsky is a 13-time James Beard Award-winning food reporter who’s lived in Chicago for more than 25 years. He’s eaten more than his fair share of pizza for his work as the “Hungry Hound” at ABC 7 News\, Host/Producer of the “Pizza City” Podcast and travel writer for The Chicago Tribune. Steve tried 185 pizzas in the region\, settling on 101 outstanding pizzas\, broken into 10 distinct styles. One of the biggest surprises of all: Chicago is a “thin” town (that is\, tavern-style\, square-cut) as opposed to the deep-dish and stuffed images of gigantic pies most people associate with The Windy City.

SUMMARY:Dames Who Read 50th Book
DESCRIPTION:Dames Who Read 50th Book\nNational Dish by Anya Von Bremzen \n \nIn this engrossing and timely journey to the crossroads of food and identity\, award-winning writer Anya von Bremzen explores six of the world’s most fascinating and iconic culinary cultures—France\, Italy\, Japan\, Spain\, Mexico\, and Turkey—brilliantly weaving cuisine\, history\, and politics into a work of scintillating connoisseurship and charm. \nTraditionally\, our winter book has been one that takes some time to read and absorb. This one is no exception. You will learn so much about how now-familiar foods have come to be identified with a specific place\, when in fact\, they may have originated somewhere else and often traveled around the globe before settling in their accepted “place.” It’s a great read! Each of the six chapters deals with a different dish and its history. There is no plot to follow\, so read them in any order. \nThis event is free to attend. This is a Dames Only event. \nRegister below by Friday\, Feb. 23 at 12 noon to get the Zoom link

SUMMARY:Dames Who Read is Back with "Lessons in Chemistry" by Bonnie Garmus
DESCRIPTION:After more 40 weeks at the top of The New York Times Book Review list\, everyone is talking about this book right now. (I even got a random positive review from a gentleman in the chair next to me at the hair salon!) \nFrom The New York Times:  “Feminism is the catalyst that makes LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY fizz like hydrochloric acid on limestone. Elizabeth Zott does not have “moxie”\, she has courage. She is not a “girl boss” or a “lady chemist”; she’s a groundbreaker\, irresistible\, satisfying\, and full of fuel.  It reminds you that change takes time and always requires heat.” \nOur discussion will center on the production of television food shows as well as the struggles to be the “first” or “only” in a role to make them happen. Three of our Dames Who Read\, who have many hours of experience in food TV\, will lead the conversation\, and chances are good that everyone will have some experiences of their own to share in this discussion! \nAnd for summer fun: We are doing this as a potluck at book club regular Dame Kay Ruff’s home in the South Loop. Please think about something you learned from a food TV show\, and bring that to share\, along with any related stories. Our hostess will provide the spectacular lake view\, the H2O and NaCl and do the dishes. You bring a dish and your beverage of choice.  \nNOTE: Please let Judith know what you intend to bring so that we don’t end up with 20 Boeuf Bourguignons! Email  judith@judithdunbarhines.com prior to July 10 with your planned contribution. \nALSO NOTE: We have a limit of 20 attendees and registration ends July 10. \nWHEN: Tuesday\, July 18 from 6-8 p.m.\nWHERE: Dame Kathy Ruff’s home\nCOST: $15 per person; limit of 20 people\nREGISTER: Click HERE to sign up by July 10

SUMMARY:Learn How to Make Pierogis Like a Pro with Dame Dobra Bielinski
DESCRIPTION:Learn pierogies from a pro! Dame Dobra Bielinski is Chicago’s foremost pierogi maker and people flock to her bakery\, Delightful Pastries in Jefferson Park\, for authentic pierogies both savory and sweet. \nIn this class\, you’ll make pierogi dough that you can take home\, and you’ll make two varieties of pierogi – cheese/potato and blueberry/sweet cheese that you can enjoy after the class (or take them home; up to you). \nDobra will teach you how to make the fillings and shape and cook the pierogies so you can recreate the pierogi magic at home with your take-home dough. Feel free to bring a bottle to share during the class. \n  \nDate: Monday March 20th \nTime: 6-8 p.m. \nLocation: Delightful Pastries at 5827 W Lawrence Avenue in Chicago \nCost: $45 per person plus service fees \nRSVP: Click here to sign up.
