DESCRIPTION:THE BOOK: A Place at the Nayarit \nHow a Mexican Restaurant Nourished a Community by Natalia Molina \nIn 1951\, Dona Natalia Barraza opened the Nayarit\, a Mexican restaurant in Echo Park\, Los Angeles. With A Place at the Nayarit\, historian Natalia Molina traces the life’s work of her grandmother\, remembered by all who knew her as Dona Natalia – a generous\, reserved\, and extraordinarily capable woman. Dona Natalia immigrated alone from Mexico to L.A.\, adopted two children\, and ran a successful business. She also sponsored\, housed\, and employed dozens of other immigrants\, encouraging them to lay claim to a city long characterized by anti-Latinx racism. Together\, the employees and customers of the Nayarit maintained ties to their old homes while providing one another safety and support. \nAs Les Dames focus on our own during this year of recovery\, it is only appropriate that we feature Dame Maria Concannon\, who immigrated from Mexico\, but soon found herself a single mom in a strange country with no way to support herself…until she opened her own restaurant\, despite being a kitchen neophyte. Years later\, she and her son are still running their restaurant\, though in a new location. The food is always delicious\, and Maria is to be admired for her many achievements. \nWe will hear her tell her story whole we enjoy her delicious authentic Mexico City style foods. You will realize that her story is not unlike that of the book – the matriarch who encouraged and supported her staff and won the admiration of her customers\, not just for the food! \nYou must be registered by noon on Friday August 12

DESCRIPTION:This event is not open to the public. \nMeeting Schedule: \n6-7 pm Business Meeting- Mandatory for all Members \nThis is our annual business meeting and  we are also delighted that we will honoring Dame Carol Haddix with the Dame of Distinction Award. Carol’s work on behalf of the chapter is legendary\, and we are very excited to celebrate her contributions and all she has done and continues to do for us. \nOur meeting will begin at 6 p.m sharp so please arrive promptly so that we can begin on time.  \nFor safety’s sake\, we request that all members be masked for the meeting portion of the evening. \n7:30-9 Dinner – We also invite you to join us for an optional dinner from  – the cost to attend the dinner is $100/pp \nIt has been far too long since we were able to gather as a full chapter\, so we hope that those of you who feel comfortable with indoor dining will choose to join us! The social part of the evening will not be masked. \nPlease RSVP thru the link below no later than May 25\, as we will need to give the restaurant a final count on dinner guests.\nAs with all of our in-person indoor events\, for the safety of everyone involved\, we request that all attendees be fully vaccinated. For those who cannot attend\, minutes from the meeting will be circulated to all members. There will not be a streaming option this year.

DESCRIPTION:This event is open to the public. \nJoin past chapter president\, Jennifer Lamplough\, to learn about the most current issues with food insecurity in our Chicago area communities. Jen is the Chef Impact Officer at the Northern Illinois Food Bank. She will share information about the programs her organization offers\, including Food Recovery\, Mobile Pantry\, Community Gardens\, Child Nutrition\, and more. Learn what you can do to help by involvement either through donation or volunteer opportunities. It is our hope that at the end of this session we can choose a date where we can join together for a volunteer opportunity followed by some Dame camaraderie over drinks or a meal. This concept very much in our Dames wheelhouse\, so please make an effort to join us. \n  \nPlease check your email for Zoom link\, we will resend again May 18.
