March 7 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

“Black Cake,” a New Novel by Charmaine Wilkerson is the Book for March
From Dame Judith Hines: I recently watched an author interview about this debut novel and found it quite interesting, so I ordered the book to see if it was “Dames-Book-Club-worthy.” It is! I then went on a hunt for the perfect place to hold our discussion, and Dame Toria Emas helped me find a family-owned restaurant whose motto is, “We believe people are better together. Our goal is to bring people together through food.”
“Black Cake” is written in a flash-back, flash-forward style, with lots of characters, and while that is not usually my favorite style, I loved the book.
Here’s a short description: “In present day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children: a recipe for a traditional Caribbean Black Cake, made from a family recipe with a long history. She also left a voice recording recounting that family’s story filled with revelations surprising, puzzling and challenging for her children and for the reader.”
So it’s a novel with a bit of mystery to unravel and plenty to discuss about family interactions, secrets and expectations. Join us at a new-ish, casual Noble Square Jamaican restaurant for dinner and bring your own impressions of the story. Yes, there will be a Black Cake to enjoy at our get-together, made from the recipe included in the book.
